Empi ical Res Voc Ed T ain (2017) 9:9 is o en used in he con ex o wo kplace lea ning (e.g. Bille 2002b, 2014). Coaching, u o ing and men o ing a e simila ac i i ies which all ha e he unde lying in en ion o p o iding suppo and encou aging he p o essional de elopmen and lea ning o indi- iduals. Howe e , he lines be ween he concep s o guidance, coaching, u o ing and men o ing a e blu ed al hough he unde lying meaning o hese concep s di e om each o he (see Gallache 1997; Wiske e al. 2013). Coaching e e s o a p ocess which occu s be ween pee s o colleagues and is a he s uc u ed and sys ema ic in na u e (Gallache 1997). Coaching has a a he na ow ocus as i o en conce ns a speci ic p oblem, and he ole o he coach is o help he coachee o de ine and o e come his p oblem (Wiske e al. 2013). Tu o ing e e s o o e ing suppo gi en by a esponsi- ble pe son wi hin he o ganisa ion o a pe son, usually a no ice, ela ed o mo e p ac i- cal ma e s. Tu o s ha e a key ole in ac ing be ween he ins i u ion and he indi idual (Wiske e al. 2013). Men o ing is also a e m equen ly used in highe educa ion con ex o e e o pe sonal suppo , ca ee de elopmen and in o- duc ion o p o essional ne wo ks (Pea son and Kay ooz 2004). Ano he concep o en adop ed in he highe educa ion con ex is supe ision, which akes place when indi idu- als ha e a long- e m ask, i.e. a hesis o a p ojec . Simila wi h coaching and men o - ing, supe ising aims a enabling and suppo ing indi iduals o de elop hei skills and achie e asks. Thus, gi ing answe s and ixed solu ions is a oided in supe ision (Wiske e al. 2013). Supe ision has adi- ionally e e ed o a mas e -app en ice ela ionship, bu la ely he ole o he academic communi y in supe ision has been emphasized (Mainha d e al. 2009). Fu he mo e, good supe ision is cha ac e ised by an emphasis on he lea ning p ocesses and gene al wo k p ocesses ins ead o he p oduc (see Pea son and B ew 2002; Veh iläinen and Lö - s öm 2016). In his s udy, we use he e m guidance o desc ibe he suppo ha membe s o he wo k communi y and eache s om oca ional ins i u es p o ide o s uden s (see also Vi anen and Tynjälä 2008). We also u ilize Bille ( 2002b) di ision o di ec and indi ec guidance o desc ibe a ious guidance p ac ices a he wo kplace. The social and physi- cal en i onmen o he wo kplace p o ides indi ec guidance ha is accessed in e e yday wo k ac i i ies when he physical a angemen s assis wo kplace lea ning and p o ide access o obse ing and lis ening mo e expe ienced cowo ke s and pee s (Bille 2002b). As much o wha one mus lea n canno be lea n h ough ial and e o alone, in en- ional wo kplace lea ning s a egies, such as guided lea ning, a e necessa y o assis an indi idual in de eloping p ocedu es and concep s equi ed o sha ed p ac ice (Bille 2002b). Di ec guidance e e s o close guidance and di ec in e ac ion be ween mo e expe ienced wo ke s and lea ne s (Bille 2002b). Bille (2002b) concludes ha wo k- place pedagogic p ac ices comp ise h ee in e dependen planes o guided engagemen wi h wo k ac i i ies.
