Keywo ds: Sleep dep i a ion , college s uden s , lea ning asks , sleep , su ey plane INTRODUCTION Sleep dep i a ion is also known as sleeplessness o insu icien sleep.Sleep dep i a ion is he condi ion in which a pe son who lacks enough sleep.In o he wo ds i is he condi ion o ha ing no sleep a all. (Ande sz and Ba giel-Ma usiewicz, 2018)To main ain a heal hy condi ion, an a e age adul needs abou 7 o 8 hou s o sleep pe day. Now du ing sleeping, all he sys ems o he body a e in an anabolic s a e which in u n helps o main ain and es o e he skele al, muscula , ne ous and immune sys ems(Na iang and P., 2019). And hese sys ems in u n main ain he mood, memo y and cogni i e pe o mance. Sleep plays a majo ole in endoc ine and immune sys ems. Ou body’s in e nal ci cadian clock is he one which p omo es sleep daily in he nigh .(Ungu en and Webe S a e Uni e si y. School o Educa ion, 2010) Sleep is di ided in o wo ypes based on he eye mo emen s du ing sleeping. I is Rapid eye mo emen (RE¡M) AND Non apid eye mo emen (NREM). REM sleep occu s in a pa e n which could impa on he lea ning p ocess. A heo y o collabo a ed ma e ial s udies shows ha REM slaps dep i a ion elimina es sleep induced imp o emen on isual p ocedu al lea ning asks.(Jones e al., 2020) The same s udy also shows ha i was no ound o sui able o he selec i e slow-wa e sleep dep i a ion. REM no mally occu s e e y 90-120 minu es which means 4 o 5 imes a nigh . Wi h a simul aneous inc ease o g ow h in he pe iod o occu ence o he REM, i will happen almos a he end o he sleep. (Holloway, 2012) Sleepiness and i egula sleep schedules ha e many unin ended consequences, one o which is o nega i ely impac lea ning, memo y and pe o mance. The dual p ocess heo y main ains ha ce ain ypes o memo y issues a e dependen on a sleep igh s a us.(Wiwani ki , 2013) Such memo ies a e conside ed on Rapid eye mo emen (REM) and decla a i e memo y on Non- apid eye mo emen (NREM). Sleep dep i a ion can be classi ied in o wo ypes based on he du a ion and episodes ha occu . (Robbins, 2015)This can be ei he ch onic(pe sis ing o long ime)o sleep dep i a ion can be acu e(an ab up onse )which occu s o he sho du a ion.He e in he case o ch onic s a e i causes weigh loss o weigh gain ,day ime sleepiness, a igue e c..I also causes sho ened a en ion and high anxie y and impai ed memo y e c. (D’Eon, 2020)Sleep dep i a ion is also said o a ec he b ain and he cogni i e unc ions o a pe son. Occasionally, in some cases i is no iced o inc ease ene gy and ale ness and also known o enhance a pe son’s mood. Sleep dep i a ion among college s uden s is caused due o day ime sleepiness. Ou eam has ex ensi e knowledge and esea ch expe ience ha has ansla ed in o high quali y publica ions (Choudha i and Thenmozhi, 2016; Go inda aju, Jee anandan and Sub amanian, 2017; Ra i e al., 2017; Vik am e al., 2017; Gup a, A iga and Deogade, 2018; Hannah e al., 2018; Ka a hapu and Thama aisel an, 2018; Pandian, K ishnan and Kuma , 2018; Ramamu hy and Mg, 2018; Ashok and Ganapa hy, 2019; Ramesh e al., 2019; Sha ma e al., 2019; Venu, Raju and Sub amani, 2019; Wu e al., 2019; Samuel, Acha ya and Rao, 2020) The main aim o his su ey was o c ea e awa eness abou e ec s o sleep dep i a ion among college s uden s. MATERIALS AND METHODS An online su ey was conduc ed wi h a sel s uc u ed ques ionnai e wi h a sample size o hund ed pa icipan s comp ising he gene al popula ion. The ques ionnai e consis s o ques ions ha help in collec ing socio- economic da a, ques ions ha help in assessing awa eness among he pa icipan s and also ela ed o he awa eness and knowledge abou sleep dep i a ion among college s uden s.The ques ionnai e was alida ed in he s anda d manne . Measu es such as selec ion o pa icipan s andomly, placing es ic ions o e he pa icipan popula ion and age g oups a e aken o minimise he bias occu ing in sampling. The ques ionnai e was ci cula ed using he online pa om “ su ey plane ” and he link was ci cula ed h ough social media o he esponden s. The esul s we e collec ed and he da a was s a is ically analysed The esponses we e eco ded and he esul s o he analysis we e ep esen ed in he o m o a pie cha . RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The esul s we e ob ained and analyzed. F om (Fig 1) i is e iden ha a ound 35.6% o college s uden s a e su e ing om sleep dep i a ion and we e awa e abou he sleep dep i a ion and i s consequences and he es 64.4% o s uden s a e no su e ing om sleep dep i a ion. F om (Fig 2) i was obse ed a ound 59.8% o s uden s belie ed ha people who we e olde han 65 yea s had sleep p oblems, 8.8% belie ed i is 45-55 yea s age g oup o people had p oblems and a ound 10.8% o 25-35 yea s age g oup o people and 20.6% o eenage s. F om (Fig 3) when asked abou he me hods o ge enough sleep, 53.3% s uden s ag eed lis ening o music p o ides enough sleep and 16.2% ag eed ha wa m ba h gi es sleep soone , 14.3% s uden s ag eed exe cise and 16.2% s uden s ag eed ha by consuming able s we may ge enough sleep. In (Fig 4) i is known ha a ound 79.4% o he s uden popula ion hinks ha consuming ca eine can cause insomnia and 20.6% disag ee wi h he s a emen . D inking ea and co ee a nigh ac i a es ou b ain cells which esul s in less amoun o sleep (Jan, Huang and Lee, 2019). (Fig 5) shows 32.4% o s uden s hink ha eenage s should ha e a ound 5-6 hou s sleep and a ound 30.4% s uden s belie es ha eenage s should ha e a leas 7-8 hou s o sleep and 13.7% o pa icipan s hinks ha hey should sleep o 8-10 hou s and 23.5% s uden s should ha e 9-11 hou s o sleep. Fig 6 depic s 92.3% o pa icipan s ha e less ene gy h oughou he day due o lack o sleep whe eas 7.7% o s uden s disag ee wi h his. Lack o sleep makes one eel i ed and exhaus ed which leads o i i a ion he whole day.(Sub amanian, 2011). F om (Fig 7) i is seen ha a ound 93.1% o he s uden pa icipan s hink ha due o lack o sleep i a ec s hei academic pe o mance and a ound 6.9% s uden s do no hink in he same way. Due o lack o sleep s uden s may eel discom o and may lose in e es in s udies and will no be able o concen a e on s udies (Zaidi, 2012). F om (Fig 8) i is e iden ha 87.3% o s uden s hinks ha sleep dep i a ion can make ones obese and a ound 12.7% do no hink ha lack o sleep can make hem obese. Acco ding o his a icle , sleep dep i a ion can make one indi idual obese due o lack o sleep (Long and Cheng, 2019).
