Applying CLIL in real-life contexts through Service-Learning

Hernández García, Alicia

Abstract

The CLIL app oach, which was coined by Da id Ma sh, s ands o “Con en and Language In eg a ed Lea ning”. Acco ding o Coyle e al. Thus, building upon his concep , communica ion in CLIL lessons is au hen ic and meaning ul because he e is a pu pose o using he a ge language: o con ey subjec -ma e issues. Se e al au ho s ha e poin ed ou ha he au hen ici y o CLIL, a he han being ound in he use o ma e ial c ea ed o na i e-speake s o he language, lies in he pu pose o easons o which he language is used (Pinne , 2013; Dal on-Pu e , 2007). Tha is, he need o use ha language o engage in he class is wha makes hose in e ac ions meaning ul, leading o au hen ic communica ion. In addi ion, conside ing Ga dne ’s (2000) heo y o mo i a ion, an essen ial elemen o mo i a ion is he desi e o lea n he language. Thus, based on he idea se ou in he p e ious pa ag aph, lea ne s a e mo i a ed because hey uly eel ha hey need o use he a ge language o cope in he class oom. In his way, no only language lea ning is acili a ed, bu also he s uden s’ commi men o lea ning he language inc eases. Mo eo e , acco ding o CLIL p inciples, hanks o his “language using”, hey lea n he a ge language unconsciously (Renau & Mas Ma í, 2018). In ac , se e al schola s suppo his idea, such as K ashen (1982), who no es ha g amma ules do no need o be explici ly augh since hey can be acqui ed subconsciously h ough exposu e o he language. Acco ding o K ashen’s comp ehensible inpu heo y (1982), we acqui e he language when we unde s and language ha con ains s uc u es ha a e sligh ly beyond ou cu en compe ence. This “unde s anding” e e s o he lea ne s being ocused on he meaning o he message, a he han on he o m. E en a he lowe le els o P ima y Educa ion, pupils will unde s and wha hei eache means, e en i hey do no unde s and all he wo ds used o he g amma ical ules in ol ed. Simila ly, when communica ing con en - ela ed issues, s uden s will concen a e only on he meaning o he message and no on he o m, os e ing communica i e compe ence and he use o language o p agma ic pu poses. Thus, as he a ge language is no he objec , bu he means o con eying con en ma e (B eeze e al., 2014), he p essu e o use he language co ec ly is g ea ly educed. This has a posi i e in luence on language acquisi ion because, as Ga dne (2000) poin s ou , he a i udes lea ne s show owa ds language lea ning con ex in luences language acquisi ion because o he emo ional associa ions s uden s make. K ashen (1982) belie es ha language can be unde s ood e en i i is abo e one’s own le el because we use con ex clues and ex a-linguis ic in o ma ion o decode i . Quali y o in e ac ions By combining CLIL and SL, CLIL bene i s because SL also inc eases he quali y o in e ac ions be ween s uden s, since, as Ma ínez-Od ía (2007) sugges s, he eache ’s ole is limi ed o ac ing only as a guide and accompanying he lea ning p ocess.
